The idea will “add a new dimension to IPL” after being utilised in the domestic T20 competition Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the first time in October-November.

According to the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting, the use of a “Impact Player” in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) will entirely hinge on whether you choose to bat or bowl first. This practically eliminates the need for allrounders in the current version of the game. This season of the Indian Premier League will mark the introduction of tactical replacements. (IPL). The idea will “add a new dimension to IPL” after being utilised in the domestic T20 competition Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the first time in October-November.

Although it is unknown whether the IPL’s system will be similar to the SMAT’s “Impact Player” regulation, if it is, teams will have a lot more tactical freedom.

“Impact Player usage relies on whether you hit first or bowl first. We will therefore put in a squad that will bowl first and a team that will bat first at the toss. And it goes without saying that you will probably substitute a hitter if you bat first. Or you might want to immediately add a batter on top of that if you choose to bat first and loose an early wicket. Therefore, there are numerous methods to utilise it, Ponting said at a gathering in New Delhi.

In comparison to other substitution methods that have been employed in the past, the Impact Player rule provides more tactical flexibility.

“It practically dismisses the value of all-around players in today’s game. Therefore, I don’t think you’ll see many, many teams this year actually use the person who might bat at position seven and maybe bowl over or two, unless they’re absolutely world-class and getting chosen either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy. Because you no longer require those people,” he continued.

But Mitchell Marsh is the one all-rounder that Delhi will be paying close attention to. He had a respectable IPL 2022 season, hitting 251 runs at a strike rate of 132.80 in eight games.

“He’s had three or four months off in Australia and is now recuperating from foot surgery he had, I believe, in November. Although he has been bowling for the past five or six weeks, he hasn’t yet bowled in any tournaments. His position in our team will therefore include bowling a few overs by the time he arrives with us. He is aware of and cognizant of that, Ponting said.

The heavyweight match between Gujarat Giants and Chennai Super Kings will kick off IPL 2023 on March 31 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
