Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remembering his 1999 United over Bayern Munich UCL winning late goal, says, “I play better angry.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the heart of one of the most dramatic events in club sport.
Solskjaer orchestrated a spectacular Manchester United title win with a right foot shot and a late goal against Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

The Norwegian, who came on as a substitute at Barcelona that night, said that the goal was the result of a perceived disrespect by his manager, Alex Ferguson.

With Manchester United losing 0-1 at halftime, Ferguson decided to bring Teddy Sheringham on first, which infuriated Solskjaer. Sheringham, of course, scored the equaliser before Solskjaer took the spotlight.

“At halftime, Sir Alex spoke with Teddy and got him ready to go. But I was in fantastic form that season, so I was wondering, ‘Why aren’t you speaking to me? Why are you speaking to Teddy?

So I prepared myself because I knew something spectacular was going to happen. I play better when I’m a little irritated. “I wanted to show Sir Alex that he made a mistake in not putting me on earlier,” Solskjaer stated on Friday.

The former Manchester United forward and manager is in town for a visit sponsored by Tilak Gaurang Shah, proprietor of ‘Ace of Pubs’.

Solskjaer had many childhood fantasies of scoring a great goal. “I scored that goal a thousand times as a child. I recall playing football alone and told myself, “If you score this, you win the European Cup.” I imagined myself as either Marco van Basten or Zico. And when that happened in 1999, everything was a haze,” Solskjaer added.

Marcus Rashford, who was recently fined two weeks’ salary for a drunken night out in Belfast, received criticism from Solskjaer. “Is it the manager’s job to get the best out of him, or is it the player’s responsibility to get the best out of yourself?” Solskjaer asked in response to a question about how current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag can get the best performance out of Rashford. I believe the latter to be true.
