Shreyas Iyer did not accompany the squad to Colombo for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium

Shreyas Iyer, an Indian batsman, will not play in Tuesday’s Asia Cup Super 4 match against Sri Lanka owing to a back spasm, according to the BCCI. Iyer did not travel with the team to the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo because of an injury he picked up during a warm-up on Sunday before India’s previous encounter against Pakistan, the BCCI said.

Although Shreyas Iyer is feeling better, his back spasm still hasn’t completely healed. He has not travelled to the stadium with the team today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka since the BCCI Medical Team has advised him to rest, the BCCI tweeted.

India’s captain Rohit Sharma said that KL Rahul was a last-minute addition to India’s XI when Iyer was unable to play during the victory against Pakistan, which required two days to complete due to rain.

The batter has injured his back three times in the past six to seven months, so Iyer’s fitness will be strictly watched. Iyer had a back issue that caused him to miss the entirety of the IPL as well as a portion of the home series against Australia. Only at this Asia Cup did he return to the Indian team.

He participated in the games against Pakistan and Nepal in the group stage. The right-hander failed to bat against Nepal and was dismissed for 14 against Pakistan after attempting to pull a Haris Rauf pitch.

Iyer’s injury, which has to do with his back, would undoubtedly prompt questions about the National Cricket Academy even though the BCCI did not provide much details about its severity. One of the most significant issues in Indian cricket over the past few years has been recurrent injuries.

Not everyone uses Iyer. Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, among others, all experienced the same injury before joining the squad, but they all made a full recovery.

It would be intriguing to watch if India sticks with Iyer as the World Cup approaches because he hasn’t yet shown that he’s fit and his back ailment hasn’t entirely healed.
