Rohan Bopanna made his Davis Cup debut in 2002 and is still playing strong tennis on the ATP Tour. He has represented India in 32 ties.

Rohan Bopanna, India’s top doubles player, revealed on Wednesday that he will end his Davis Cup career when India hosts Morocco in September, but the Karnataka player will not be able to play his farewell match in his home state, as he desired, because AITA has already awarded the match to Uttar Pradesh. In September, India will meet Morocco in a World Group II match. Bopanna, 43, made his Davis Cup debut in 2002 and is currently playing well on the ATP Tour. He has played 32 ties for India.

“I intend to play my final Davis Cup match in September,” Bopanna said from London.

“I’ve been a member of the team since 2002.” I want it to be staged in India, and I’ve spoken to all of the lads (Indian players), and they’re all excited to play in Bengaluru. KSLTA is also pleased to have it. It is now up to our federation to decide whether or not to hold the event in Bangalore.

“Since I’ve been playing for 20 years, all I have to do is talk to the captain and see if they want to do it there.” It will be beneficial for everyone to attend and see one final time. “Playing at 43 is a bonus,” remarked Bopanna, the only Indian to have won a Grand Slam championship.

It is only fitting that a player who has contributed to Indian tennis’ success in the renowned event throughout the years has the opportunity to play his final match at his preferred site.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) confirmed to PTI that the tie will not be awarded to the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA).

“To be fair, it would have been preferable for Rohan to play his final India match in Bengaluru, but we are already committed to UP.” The match has already been scheduled for Lucknow, according to AITA Secretary General Anil Dhupar.

Leander Paes has made the most appearances for India, with 58, followed by Jaideep Mukherjee (43), Ramanathan Krishnan (43), Premjit Lal (41) Anand Amirtraj (39), Mahesh Bhupathi (35), and Vijay Amritraj (32).

So, when he plays against Morocco, Bopanna will pass the legendary Vijay Amritraj in terms of Davis Cup appearances. Bopanna won 12 singles matches and 10 doubles rubbers in his 32 ties.

When asked if he will continue to compete on the ATP Tour, Bopanna said yes.

“If I don’t play on Tour, another Indian will take my place.” If I don’t play Wimbledon, it’s not like that position will be filled by an Indian. However, my place in the Davis Cup will be taken by an Indian. “Because it’s been so long, there are a lot of new players.” When asked when he decided to retire from Davis Cup, Bopanna responded, “I always had it in my mind that I had to stop at some point.” And because this is a home game, I figured it was a good time to go.

It is also significant for the country.” Bopanna is 43 years old, yet he is still winning titles on the Tour. at March, he became the oldest player to win an ATP1000 Master Series tournament (at Indian Wells, California).

Bopanna beat the record set by Canadian Daniel Nestor, who won the Cincinnati Masters at the age of 42 in 2015.
