Gaekwad, 95, was the father of former India opener and national coach Aunshuman Gaekwad. He died early this morning after battling for life in the ICU of a Baroda hospital for the previous 12 days, according to a family source.

“The BCCI is deeply saddened by the death of Dattajirao Gaekwad, former India captain and India’s oldest Test player. He played 11 Tests and headed India’s tour of England in 1959. Baroda won the Ranji Trophy in 1957-58, defeating Services in the final, while he was captain. The Board’s sincere condolences go out to Gaekwad’s family, friends, and admirers,” the BCCI posted in a tribute on X (previously known as Twitter).

Between 1952 and 1961, he participated in 11 Test matches for India. In 1959, he led the team during its tour of England.
In his final international match, the right-hander played against Pakistan in Chennai in 1961 after making his debut against England in Leeds in 1952.

Gaekwad played for Baroda in the Ranji Trophy between 1947 and 1961. At an average of 47.56, he scored 3139 runs, 14 hundred among them.

His greatest was a 1959–60 season 249 not out against Maharashtra.

After former hitter Deepak Shodhan passed away in Ahmedabad in 2016 at the age of 87, he became the oldest living Test cricket player in India.
