Yuzvendra Chahal reached the milestone during his team’s match against the Punjab Kings in Guwahati

Yuzvendra Chahal of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) surpassed renowned Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga on Wednesday to become the second-highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. In the cash-rich competition, the veteran spinner is the only Indian bowler with 170+ wickets. He reached this milestone during his team’s encounter against the Punjab Kings in Guwahati. Chahal was penalised during the game. It was a poor day at work for the spinner after a match-winning 4/17 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. While he did get Jitesh Sharma out for 27 off 16 deliveries, he was smashed for 50 runs in his four-over quota and finished with an economy rate of 12.50.

Chahal has 171 wickets in 133 matches for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before joining Rajasthan Royals, with an average of 21.58 and an economy rate of 7.62. His best league bowling scores are 5/40.

Malinga, who played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL from 2009 to 2019, took 170 wickets in 122 matches at an average of 19.79 and an economy rate of 7.14. His highest bowling average is 5/13.

Dwayne Bravo is the league’s all-time top wicket-taker. The all-rounder for the Chennai Super Kings and the West Indies has taken 183 wickets in 161 appearances at an average of 23.82 and an economy rate of 8.38. His best league bowling numbers are 4/22. Amit Mishra (166 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin are two other prominent players behind Bravo, Chahal, and Malinga. (159).

In the match, Punjab Kings scored 197/4 after RR put them in to play first. Punjab benefited greatly from an explosive 90-run opening partnership between Prabhsimran Singh (60 off 34 balls, with seven fours and three sixes) and skipper Shikhar Dhawan. Jitesh Sharma (27 off 16 deliveries, two fours and a six) and Dhawan (86 off 56 balls, nine fours and three sixes) added a 33-ball 66-run stand.

Jason Holder was the standout spinner, recording 2/29 in four overs. Ravichandran Ashwin and Chahal each took one wicket.RR’s inning is presently underway.
