Shreyas Iyer missed the entire IPL 2023 season due to a back injury that necessitated surgery in London in April, forcing KKR to hand Nitish Rana the captaincy.

Shreyas Iyer, an Indian middle-order hitter, will captain the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024, the team’s management said on Thursday. The 29-year-old had missed the entire IPL 2023 season due to a back injury that necessitated surgery in London in April, leading KKR to choose Nitish Rana as captain. KKR CEO Venky Mysore made the announcement, saying, “We are delighted that he’s back and at the helm as captain.” Shreyas returned to form in the Asia Cup in September, scoring an 86-ball century in Mohali in the home series against Australia.

He batted at the crucial No. 4 spot in the recently finished World Cup, scoring 530 runs from 11 innings with two hundreds and three fifties at an average of 66.25.

“The way he has worked hard to recover from his injury and the form he has displayed is a testament to his character.” Rana, who led KKR to a seventh-place finish in the IPL 2023, was named vice-captain.

“I believe the last season presented us with several challenges, including my absence due to injury,” Shreyas stated in an interview.

“Nitish did an excellent job not only filling in for me, but also with his commendable leadership.” I am overjoyed that KKR has named him Vice-Captain. “There is no doubt that it will strengthen the leadership group,” KKR captain continued.
