Yoni Patel, the Legend Cricket League 2024 team manager, has been charged with match-fixing by the Colombo High Court.

The Attorney General notified the Colombo High Court that Yoni Patel, the manager of the Legend Cricket League 2024 cricket side, had been charged with match-fixing. Following reports from former New Zealand great Neil Broom, who played for the Punjab Royals, and Sri Lankan cricketer Upul Tharanga, who plays for the Kandy Samp Army squad, Patel was charged with match-fixing during the Legend Cricket League 2024. The two former cricket players said that Patel put pressure on them to take part in match-fixing transactions.

As per the preliminary inquiries, a player who was suspected of manipulating match results had approached other players and offered them money in exchange for doing poorly.

On Monday, the State Counsel representing Sri Lanka’s Attorney General brought up the magisterial inquiry against Yoni Patel before the Colombo Magistrate. He revealed that an indictment for a criminal trial before the High Court had already been filed.

Patel and P. Akash, another Legend Cricket League club manager, were previously prohibited from departing Sri Lanka by the Colombo Magistrate.

The Legend Cricket League 2024 was held from March 8 to 19 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in the island’s Central province mountains in Kandy. It included seven teams made up of former international cricket players from England, Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and the West Indies.
The Road Safety Series in India, a Legends championship with seven franchises owned by foreign business tycoons, was to be matched by the event, which the Indian cricket board officially recognized. The location for the championship was the single formal contribution made by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the nation’s cricket governing body, to the competition.
