Jay Shah On The Contentious IPL Rule: Impact Player Is Like A Test Case

Jay Shah declined to say whether or not the Indian Premier League’s Impact Player rule would remain in place (IPL).

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stated that decisions on the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) would be made after talking with coaches and captains. But he emphasized how important the rule is, which allows an IPL side to include two more Indian players in their starting lineup. The BCCI Secretary stated that while the Impact Player rule is not “permanent,” a decision regarding its use in upcoming IPL editions will be taken after consulting with relevant parties during the 2024 T20 World Cup. The rule has been a major subject of discussion during the IPL 2024.

One of the main reasons for the massive scores in the IPL 2024 has been attributed to the Impact Player rule. For instance, Rohit Sharma has claimed that the restriction has hindered the nation’s progress in producing all-rounders. He was the first well-known Indian player to voice opposition to the rule, which was implemented for the 2023 IPL.

“Impact Player works like a test case. We’ve been steadily implementing it. The most significant benefit is that two Indian players are given a chance [in each game]. We’ll talk to the players, franchises, and broadcasters before making a decision. This is not permanent [but] I am not saying it will be removed,” Shah told reporters at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, according to news sources.

“We’ll see if it makes the game more competitive. Even However, if a player believes that this is incorrect, we will speak with them. But nobody has told us anything yet, so that will be decided after the World Cup,” he said.

“So, it must be a terrific show for the fans to see these numbers rise all the time, and it definitely emphasizes ball execution more. It can be really difficult for bowlers at times, but we’ve placed a strong emphasis on death bowling, particularly with the Impact Player [law],” he added.

Mitchell Starc, a fast bowler for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), also claimed that the Impact Player rule had led to bowlers’ poor performance in the current IPL 2024 season.Things are somewhat altered by the Impact Player regulation. When there is a batting and bowling XI, everyone can bat much deeper. Since the wickets and grounds we play on here are such, this rule has been invoked frequently during the competition and many big scores have resulted from it. There’s a long batting lineup when you have batting all-rounders and players coming in at Nos. 8 or 9, according to Starc, who has so far given up runs at an average of 11.37.
