Following Sri Lanka’s disastrous 2024 T20 World Cup, in which the island nation was unable to advance to the Super Eight stage, head coach Chris Silverwood has tendered his resignation.

Citing personal reasons, Chris Silverwood has resigned from his position as head coach of the Sri Lanka national team. Silverwood stated that he had been “away from loved ones” and that he was eager to spend time with his family in a statement issued by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Days after legendary Sri Lankan player Mahela Jayawardene left the national team as a consultant, the Englishman has resigned.

“Working as an international coach requires extended time away from family and friends. I feel it’s time for me to go back home and spend some quality time with my family after having long talks with them and feeling sad,” Silverwood stated.

“I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of the success would have been possible. It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories,” Silverwood continued.

During his leadership, Sri Lanka advanced to the finals of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023 and won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022. The team also won other bilateral series, both domestically and internationally. They included two away Test series victories over Bangladesh and a 50-overs home series victory over Australia.
