George Bailey’s selection panel includes head coach Andrew McDonald, who has given the 32-year-old Mitch Marsh strong support.

Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has backed Mitchell Marsh to start ahead of Pat Cummins in the next T20 World Cup, which will be held in the USA and the West Indies. Marsh is expected to lead his team in this highlight event.

The harsh Marsh was initially selected the T20I team’s captain following Australia’s victory over India in the World Test Championship last year. After hammering 92* and 79* in the opening two games, Marsh led Australia to a 3-0 series rout in South Africa, where he was named Player of the Series. Marsh captained Australia to a 2-1 victory against the West Indies at home earlier this year, and they went on to defeat New Zealand 3-0 away.

George Bailey is the selection panel’s chair, and the 32-year-old has the solid support of head coach Andrew McDonald. The other participant on the panel is Tony Dodemaide. The three will inform Cricket Australia (CA) of their chosen option.

“I believe that Mitch will be reached by all roads, so we need to address that in some areas.” We’re pleased and at ease with how he’s been able to perform with that T20 squad.

Marsh was raised to the role of T20I leadership post Aaron Finch’s retirement, under whom the squad clinched their maiden T20 World Cup in 2021. Marsh, who won Player of the Match for his explosive 77 against New Zealand in the final, was a key player in the team’s victory. Veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has been taking on the captain’s duty in Marsh’s absence. Following Australia’s victory in the ODI World Cup in November 2023, Wade led his team to a 4-1 series loss to India in a weaker lineup.

Marsh has amassed 1432 runs with nine half-centuries and 17 wickets at an average of 22.76 in 54 Twenty20 Internationals.

Australia, Oman, England, Namibia, and Scotland are the other teams in Group B of the inaugural 20-team T20 World Cup. They are not expected to play any more Twenty20 Internationals before the competition; their campaign against Oman begins on June 6 in Barbados.
