Sunrisers Hyderabad have parted ways with Brian Lara after finishing last in the IPL 2023.
After a terrible season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have chosen to break ways with head coach Brian Lara. The Orange Army finished 10th in the 10-team tournament last season after being champions in the 2016 edition of the cash-rich league. The renowned West Indian cricketer left the SRH camp on Monday, the Hyderabad-based team confirmed.

Former West Indies captain Lara took over as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the lead-up to the 2023 IPL season, succeeding ex-Australian cricketer Tom Moody. Lara has been hired as Hyderabad’s batting coach and strategic advisor for the IPL 2022. In the T20 league’s 2022 season, the Hyderabad giants finished ninth after losing eight games.

Despite replacing Moody as head coach of the Hyderabad franchise, Lara failed to create a turnaround at the SRH camp in IPL 2023. Sunrisers Hyderabad finished with a wooden spoon in IPL 2023 after finishing eighth in the elite event in 2021 and 2022.

In addition to confirming Daniel Vettori’s hiring as the head coach of the Hyderabad club after parting ways with Lara following a dismal season, SRH also announced the departure of Lara from the team. In the Hundred, Vettori is leading the Birmingham Phoenix team. From 2014 to 2018, Vettori served as the head coach of the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team.

Bangalore made the playoffs in 2015 under former RCB head coach Vettori. Under Vettori’s leadership, the Kohli-led RCB participated in the 2016 IPL championship game. As a bowling consultant for Bangladesh, the former New Zealand captain has experience. Since May 2022, Vettori has been linked with Australia’s national team.

After Moody (2019 and 2022), Trevor Bayliss (2020 and 2021), and Lara (2023), Vettori is Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fourth head coach in six seasons. SRH, previous IPL champions, last advanced to the playoffs in 2020. In the 2017 IPL season, SRH only managed four victories.
