A top BCCI official has encouraged Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision after the former skipper told the board of his intention to retire from Test cricket. India will tour England for five Tests beginning on June 20.
Virat Kohli, former India captain, has notified the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intention to retire from Test cricket before the tour of England, which begins on June 20, according to reports. Kohli informed the BCCI of his decision a few days ago and is unlikely to play the five-match Test series in England.However, a senior BCCI official has contacted Virat Kohli and urged him to reconsider his choice. Kohli’s announcement comes only days after captain Rohit Sharma announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. Both Kohli and Rohit had previously retired from T20Is following India’s World Cup victory in Barbados last year.
This big breakthrough comes shortly before the selection committee meets to choose the squad for the Test series in England, which will also mark the start of India’s new World Test Championship cycle. Devajit Saikia, the BCCI’s secretary, previously told India Today that the Test trip squad would be announced by the end of May.Virat Kohli struggled during the 2024-25 Test season. The top batsman battled for consistency in Australia during the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series. Kohli scored just 190 runs in five Tests. Despite making a century in the first Test of the series in Perth, he scored only 85 runs in the subsequent four matches. Kohli’s tour of Australia, where he had previously ruled the batting statistics, proved difficult.
Kohli has played 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs, including 30 hundreds.
