End of an Era as Indian Cricket Icon Steps Away from the Longest Format
In a heartfelt announcement on May 12, 2025, Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli declared his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtains down on an illustrious 14-year journey in the format. Kohli shared an emotional message on social media, reflecting on his debut in 2011 and the personal and professional growth he experienced through Test cricket.
“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote.
Kohli’s decision comes shortly after the retirement of fellow teammate and captain Rohit Sharma, signaling a new phase for the Indian Test team ahead of their England tour. He retires as India’s fourth-highest Test run-scorer and one of the most passionate ambassadors of the red-ball game during the T20 era.
While stepping away from Tests and having previously retired from T20 Internationals after India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, Kohli confirmed that he will still be available for One Day Internationals and continue playing in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Tributes from across the cricketing world have poured in, with the ICC and cricketing legends lauding Kohli’s unwavering commitment, fierce competitiveness, and invaluable contribution to the growth of Test cricket globally.
