In the IPL 2022 mega auction, MS Dhoni was CSK’s second choice at a cost of Rs 12 crore.

Prior to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction, each of the ten teams may keep up to six players. One of the six retentions must be an uncapped player, the members of the IPL General Council decided during a meeting in Bengaluru on Saturday. At least one of the six retentions should go to an uncapped player, while the other five can go to any number of Indian or foreign players, according to the official announcement from IPL GC.A team can retain the six players either directly or through a combination of retention and RTM options.

If a club wishes to keep five players, the first three would cost Rs 18 crore, Rs 14 crore, and Rs 11 crore, respectively, from the overall budget of Rs 120 crore, up Rs 20 crore from last year’s auction.

The final two picks will cost the teams Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore, respectively. To be more specific, a team will enter the auction with Rs 45 crore if it decides to keep five players.A franchise may also keep no more than two uncapped players. According to a BCCI release published on ESPNcricinfo, the IPL GC has opted to maintain a salary restriction of Rs 4 crore for uncapped players.

“The IPL has chosen to reinstate a regulation that was implemented in 2008, allowing Indian players who had retired from international competition at least five years before to enter the auction as uncapped players. The rule, which was never applied, was repealed in 2021. However, during the broader conversation on uncapped players, the IPL notified the clubs that the regulation would be reinstated,” according to a report.

In that instance, five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can keep franchise legend MS Dhoni uncapped if they so desire.
Dhoni was CSK’s second-round pick in the IPL 2022 mega auction, costing Rs 12 crore. Dhoni, who turned 43 in July, has only appeared in the IPL since his international retirement in August 2020.

However, the star has been tight-lipped regarding his future playing plans.
